The City of Chula Vista is proud to announce the appointment of Ashley Milo as the new Director of Animal Services, marking a significant milestone in her 12-year career with the City.
Milo began her journey with Chula Vista in 2013 as an Animal Care Assistant, steadily advancing through multiple roles before being named Director. With decades of animal care experience including work with exotic animals, rescue operations, and community-based veterinary support, she brings a unique perspective and a deep passion for both animals and the people who care for them.
"Like many of us in this field, I started with a love for animals, but over time I've learned that supporting the people, the staff, volunteers, and community members is just as important," Milo said. "My vision is to strengthen Animal Services as a trusted community resource, helping families keep pets healthy, safe, and at home whenever possible."
Before joining the City, Milo gained hands-on experience working with exotic animals, including tigers and primates, as well as with large-scale dog rescue operations. Her career path shaped her ability to manage complex environments and foster collaboration across teams and communities.
As Director, Milo has set priorities that include, expanding community resources such as behavior and training assistance to help families keep pets in their homes. Strengthening partnerships with local organizations and exploring creative new collaborations to expand outreach and adoption opportunities. Growing volunteer and foster programs to support the shelter's mission and improve the quality of life for animals in care. Reducing shelter overcapacity, particularly for large-breed dogs, through innovative adoption efforts and preventative community support.
"Ashley's appointment as Director of Animal Services is well deserved. Her journey is a true reflection of hard work, perseverance, and heart," said City Manager Maria Kachadoorian. "Ashley has spent more than a decade serving this community with compassion and integrity, and she has proven time and again that she is the right person to lead this department into the future."
