U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is mobilizing U.S. military forces to support Department of State-led U.S. government relief operations in Panama following the Oct. 9 earthquake.
SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan has directed immediate support to help the people of Panama, including on-the-ground support from rotary-wing aircraft from Joint Task Force-Bravo, personnel from Joint Security Cooperation Group-Panama, and the airlift of key personnel and supplies into the country.
Assigned forces will provide specialized mobility services and support to U.S. government personnel who are working with Panamanian authorities to assess damage, locate the injured, and deliver critical, life-saving assistance.
SOUTHCOM will work closely with the State Department and Panamanian authorities to plan, coordinate, and direct the U.S. military's unparalleled logistical and operational capabilities in support of rapid relief operations.
The United States stands with the people of Panama.
"On behalf of U.S. Southern Command, our hearts go out to the people of Panama following yesterday's earthquake," Donovan said. "Because of our deep, expanding partnership, we are already on the ground providing immediate relief to our friends. We are proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our friends in this time of adversity."
