ATLANTA - State Representatives Lisa Campbell (D-Kennesaw), Mary Frances Williams (D-Marietta), Solomon Adesanya (D-Marietta) and Gabriel Sanchez (D-Smyrna) today issued the following statement regarding the Marietta Police Department's recent decision to enter into a 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE):
"After learning about Marietta's 287(g) task force model agreement, which was reported in the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Marietta Daily Journal, we immediately held an in-person meeting with Marietta Chief of Police David Beam on Saturday, February 21, 2026, to learn more about the decision and impact. Our goals for the meeting were to understand how the decision was reached, the standard operating procedures that would be in place to ensure public safety for our community members and determine best practices for ongoing transparency and accountability.
"Because of our concerns and in light of the events unfolding around the country due to escalating ICE violence, we affirmed during our meeting with Chief Beam that public safety is the number one concern for the city of Marietta police. We emphasized that families deserve to feel safe calling the police, reporting crime and asking for help without fear that a routine interaction could become an immigration enforcement encounter. We shared the need for full transparency from city leadership about how this policy will be implemented, what safeguards are in place and how they will prevent racial profiling and other harms. We called for clear public reporting, strong oversight and a commitment that Marietta families will not be targeted in routine police interactions.
"As we continue forward, we are committed to ongoing work together with the city of Marietta, state legislators and local leadership to ensure our collective safety is paramount and that de-escalation is centered in our immigration discussions and policies. We remain committed to standing against the egregious, harmful and deadly actions we've witnessed in other cities and vow to remain united in our proactive work to build safety and security in Marietta and throughout Cobb County. Our constituents deserve safety and dignity. We remain committed to protecting the constitutional rights of all Marietta residents and to ensuring that local public safety policies strengthen trust rather than erode it."
