"We are proud to be able to expand our highly advanced AI and supercomputing expertise and facilities and also make them accessible to Brabant."
Brabant companies, knowledge institutions and authorities will get easy access to extremely powerful AI-computers. The province of Noord-Brabant has decided to invest more than 4 million euros in the AI Supercomputing initiative Brabant. This partnership between the province and Eindhoven University of Technology, Tilburg University and the Brabant Development Agency (BOM) supports organizations in their step from ordinary computers to an AI supercomputer.
With artificial intelligence (AI), companies, knowledge institutions and authorities can develop smart applications that help, for example, to improve production processes and make informed decisions based on data. For example, AI enables faster diagnoses in healthcare and can control traffic flows in a smarter way. In this way, AI applications strengthen both daily life and the economy.
"AI is increasingly determining the distinctive character of companies," says province deputy Martijn van Gruijthuijsen. "With this investment, we ensure that Brabant entrepreneurs have easy access to computing power and knowledge needed to grow. This is how we keep Brabant internationally competitive."
The AI supercomputers used have many extremely powerful AI processors at their disposal. This allows them to process huge amounts of data and train complex AI models. Companies and researchers now often work with AI on laptops or standard computers. That works fine for small tests, but falls short when developing advanced AI models.
Many organizations see opportunities in supercomputing, but run into barriers. Its use requires specialist knowledge, high investments and access to complex infrastructure. Patrick Groothuis, vice president of TU/e: "We are proud to be able to expand our highly advanced AI and supercomputing expertise and facilities and thus also make them accessible to Brabant. In this way, we contribute to innovation and economic advantage in the province. At the same time, in this way we build up knowledge together about the use of supercomputers efficiently."
The AI Supercomputing Initiative Brabant is expected to start in the spring of 2026. From that moment on, organizations can make use of practical guidance, such as help with code optimization, data management and questions about laws, regulations and ethics around AI. In addition, an active community is being built with training courses, a public knowledge base and innovation tables where entrepreneurs, governments and knowledge institutions come up with solutions to complex issues together. "We start with the entrepreneur's question and connect it to computing power, knowledge and practical guidance. In this way, a rough use case becomes a working AI solution with concrete results in a short time," says Chantal Dietvorst - ten Tije, Managing Director Ecosystems Development and member MT at BOM.
The AI Supercomputing initiative not only provides access to powerful computing and data capacity for AI, but also builds a complete ecosystem of support. Scientists from TU/e and Tilburg University work together with entrepreneurs and governments to share knowledge and accelerate innovation.
"Powerful ecosystems in which companies, knowledge institutions, and governments work together are crucial for the rapid development, application, and adoption of AI technology," said Antoinette de Bont, Vice-Rector Magnificus of Tilburg University. "Innovative organizations gain access to the latest knowledge about smart use of data, flexible business models that adapt with a changing environment and insights about human interaction with technology. At Tilburg University, we are very happy to work with this bundling of expertise to accelerate and sustainably strengthen Brabant's earning capacity."
