News 22 March 2026 IOM Chief Condemns Sudan Hospital Attack

Geneva, 22 March 2026 - Commenting on reports of a deadly strike on a healthcare facility in East Darfur, which has killed dozens of civilians, including children, and injured many more, the International Organization for Migration's (IOM) Director General, Amy Pope, said:

"This latest incident underscores the devastating toll the conflict in Sudan continues to take on civilians. The war has been marked by targeted violence against specific ethnic communities and alarming levels of gender-based violence against women and girls. Communities are being subjected to repeated attacks, including the use of explosive weapons in populated areas, leaving families shattered and essential services in ruins.

As Sudan approaches the third anniversary of this conflict, it remains the world's largest displacement crisis, with millions forced from their homes and in urgent need of assistance and protection.

IOM reiterates its urgent call on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and ensure safe, sustained humanitarian access.

While media and humanitarian attention is drawn away by other escalating conflicts, Sudan continues to suffer. We must not forget Sudan and its people who have endured brutality for three years."
