ICANN85 Readout – Highlights & Take-Aways from the Community Forum

The ICANN85 Readout, hosted by eco - Association of the Internet Industry and ICANN, brought together global stakeholders to review highlights from the ICANN85 Community Forum in Mumbai. More than 1,400 participants attended the meeting in person, with over 660 joining online to discuss the latest developments in Internet governance and ICANN policy.

Key topics included:

• DNS Abuse: ICANN launched the first in a planned series of Policy Development Processes on DNS abuse, focusing on whether registrars should be required to investigate other domains associated with an account linked to malicious registrations. Participants stressed the need for an effective but proportionate approach that protects privacy and avoids collateral damage.
• WSIS+20 and Multistakeholder Governance: The Technical Community Coalition for Multistakeholderism welcomed the reaffirmation of the multistakeholder model and the renewed mandate for the Internet Governance Forum, while outlining continued engagement with the IGF, ICANN and the ITU Plenipotentiary process.
• Next Round of New gTLDs: Discussions covered the Applicant Support Programme, internationalised domain names, contention resolution and preparations for the next application round. The support programme had received more applications than originally expected, with applicants eligible for fee reductions, mentoring and additional assistance.
• Registration Data Access: Following the ICANN Board's decision not to adopt the original recommendations for the Standardized System for Access and Disclosure, the GNSO will develop supplemental recommendations designed to produce a more practical and financially sustainable system.
• Human Rights: The community discussed how human rights, privacy and data-protection considerations should be integrated throughout ICANN's policy-development processes, including the new DNS abuse PDP.
• Review Processes: Proposed reforms aim to make ICANN's system of accountability and structural reviews more flexible, focused and manageable for the volunteer community.
• Regional Internet Registry Governance: Work continued on updating ICP-2, including clearer criteria for the recognition, oversight and possible de-recognition of Regional Internet Registries.
• Universal Acceptance and Internet Resilience: Participants highlighted the need to support domain names and email addresses across different languages and scripts, while also examining the growing importance of resilience across the Internet's technical infrastructure.

The Readout highlighted the breadth of ICANN's ongoing policy work and the importance of continued cooperation across the technical community, governments, businesses and Internet users.
