City Opens Funding Applications for 2026 Indigenous Peoples Day Events

The City of Boulder will open rolling applications for 2026 Indigenous Peoples Day events today, Wednesday, August 26, 2026. Events will be co-funded by the Human Relations Fund (HRF) and Office of Arts and Culture.

Applications for this fund round are rolling and will be accepted until Monday, September 21, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. Both English and Spanish applications are available. Learn more about available Human Relations Funds and find application information on the city's website.

Indigenous Peoples Day events and celebrations should honor the existence, culture and contributions of the original inhabitants of North America in the context of the Boulder community. Each year, hundreds of community members participate in celebration activities including dances, poetry, teach-ins, film screenings and performances to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.

In 2016, the Human Relations Commission and community members drafted the Indigenous Peoples Day Resolution (Resolution No. 1190), which was presented at the Aug. 2, 2016, Boulder City Council meeting and adopted by the City of Boulder. It declared the second Monday of October of each year to be Indigenous Peoples Day. The resolution also guides the city's ongoing collaboration with American Indian Tribal Nations and ongoing work to correct omissions of Indigenous Peoples' presence in places, resources and cultural programming.

In 2026, HRF support will focus only on community-initiated events associated with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth, Immigrant Heritage Month and Indigenous Peoples Day, that raise awareness of civil rights, human rights, or equity issues and problems in Boulder; facilitate interaction, understanding, collaboration and civic participation among diverse communities; and enable communities that experience marginalization to celebrate events significant to them while providing learning opportunities to the general population.
