Independence Celebrates Opening of Independence Municipal Commons

City officials, employees, and residents gathered Thursday to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of Independence Municipal Commons, a new centralized hub for city services designed to improve accessibility, collaboration, and the overall resident experience.

The new facility brings multiple City departments together under one roof, creating a more efficient and coordinated space for residents, businesses, and employees.

"This project started with a clear objective: improve how we deliver services to the people who visit us and how our teams work together internally," said Lisa Reynolds, Deputy City Manager and project lead. "Now departments are together in a space intentionally designed to better support both residents and staff."

The project represents a broader effort to modernize the facilities that support public service across Independence.

"Not all staff are in their final space, and there is still more work ahead," said City Manager Troy Anderson. "This building is one step in a larger effort to strengthen how this organization operates, for both our employees and the residents we serve."

Future facility investments include new fire stations, including Fire Station 8, which broke ground in March, continued improvements at the Justice Center, and upgrades to facilities supporting employees who work in the field.

City leaders also noted the economic momentum surrounding the project. Since the City's relocation, approximately $5.6 million in private investment has been announced or initiated along the Jackson Drive corridor.

Meanwhile, demolition is underway at the former City Hall site on the Independence Square, where Mid-Continent Public Library will take ownership of the property after demolition is complete and hopes to transform it into its new headquarters facility. The proposed building would be home to more than 100 employees who serve MCPL's 34 branches, including 4 in Independence.

"Today's ribbon-cutting is not just about one building or one district," said Mayor Kevin King. "It's about improving how we serve our residents and continuing to move the entire city forward."

The Independence Municipal Commons will serve as the primary administrative hub for city operations and public-facing services for decades to come.
