Cumberlands' 2026 One Big Give Raises More Than $406,000, Surpassing Goal by 35%

More than 2,600 donors unite to support scholarships, student organizations, academics, athletics, and more

University of the Cumberlands raised $406,467 during its 2026 One Big Give campaign, surpassing its $300,000 fundraising goal by more than $106,000. Held Tuesday, November 3, the annual day of giving brought together 2,631 donors in a collective show of support for Cumberlands students and the university's mission.

One Big Give provides alumni, families, faculty, staff, students, and friends of the university an opportunity to invest in the programs and experiences that make a Cumberlands education possible. Contributions support scholarships, academic departments, student organizations, missions, athletics, and other initiatives that help students grow academically, personally, and professionally.

"Our Cumberlands family has once again shown what's possible when we come together for our students. Raising more than $406,000 is an incredible achievement, but the true impact lies in the opportunities your generosity creates," said Tyler Smith, Vice President for Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement.

A Community United by Generosity

The success of One Big Give reflects a community of supporters whose connection to Cumberlands extends well beyond campus.

Friends of the university represented the largest donor group at 37%, followed by alumni at 26%, parents and relatives at 23%, faculty and staff at 10%, and students at 8%. Because donors could identify with more than one group, the percentages total more than 100%.

The strong participation among friends of the university highlights the reach of Cumberlands' mission, drawing support from individuals who may have no direct affiliation with the institution but believe in the value of accessible, high-quality education.

"Behind these numbers is a community that believes in our students and their futures. Every gift, no matter the size, helps us continue our mission of equipping students to make a difference in Appalachia and beyond, and we're truly thankful to everyone who made these achievements possible," Smith added.

Record-Setting Support Creates Opportunities for Students

This year's campaign also set several records, including 14 matching gift opportunities and fundraising challenges throughout the day. Initiatives such as the "Together Challenge" and "Lunchtime Power Hour" helped generate more than $100,000 in contributions.

Student clubs and honor societies achieved a milestone of their own, raising a record $20,726, a 150% increase over their 2025 One Big Give total.

These contributions will help student organizations provide experiences beyond the classroom, from hands-on learning and professional development to networking opportunities and campus engagement.

Among the participating organizations was The Patriot, Cumberlands' student newspaper, which shared how donor support helps student journalists develop their skills while serving the campus community.

"With your generosity, we can continue telling the stories that matter, highlighting our campus community and providing valuable hands-on experience for student journalists," the newspaper shared in a Facebook post.

"Every donation, big or small, helps us grow and continue doing what we love! We are so thankful for everyone who supports our newspaper."

Advocates Expand the Reach of One Big Give

Another driving force behind this year's success was a network of 220 online One Big Give Advocates who helped spread the word by sharing the campaign with friends, family, and personal networks.

Together, these advocates generated more than $82,000 in contributions, inspired 1,383 gifts, and drove 8,888 clicks to the campaign's giving page.

Their efforts demonstrated how individual supporters can multiply their impact by encouraging others to participate.

To recognize their contributions, organizers awarded prizes to top advocates and hosted a "One Big Thanks" appreciation event featuring coffee and cookies.

"We are thrilled with our results! This year, we not only exceeded our goal of $300K, but we had more campus involvement and alumni giving than ever before," said Courtney Bidwell, Director of Donor Relations. "It's been a meaningful way for anyone anywhere who loves Cumberlands to show their generosity and make a meaningful difference."

While the 2026 One Big Give campaign has concluded, opportunities to support Cumberlands students continue throughout the year. To make a gift or learn more about giving opportunities, visit www.ucumberlands.edu/give.
