Fairmont State University will travel to Charleston on Friday, January 23, for its annual Day at the Capitol, highlighting the University's transformational impact on West Virginia's economy, workforce, and communities. During the event, students, faculty, and staff will engage with lawmakers, present top-notch programs, and demonstrate how Fairmont State's Vision goes beyond campus to help make all of West Virginia a Great Place to Learn, to Work, and to Call Home.
"Fairmont State's Day at the Capitol is about more than just sharing our successes-it's about demonstrating how deeply we are invested in West Virginia's future," said President Mike Davis. "We are champions for West Virginia's progress. Our work doesn't stop at the classroom door. It reaches into every corner of the state, fueling economic growth, preparing career-ready graduates, and strengthening communities. From groundbreaking academic programs to hands-on partnerships that change lives, Fairmont State is shaping a future where all West Virginians thrive."
Fairmont State University is a major economic driver for the Mountain State. In 2025, the University generated $170.6 million in total sales and output impact, supported more than 650 jobs statewide, and provided $73.4 million in employee compensation. For every dollar of state appropriations received, Fairmont State created $8.25 in economic value, demonstrating an extraordinary return on investment for West Virginia taxpayers.
The University also plays a critical role in workforce development. Fairmont State graduates are career-ready and prepared to meet the state's most pressing needs. New academic programs, such as the B.A. in Outdoor Leadership and the M.S. in Environmental Science, are designed to address workforce gaps in recreation, environmental stewardship, and sustainability. Fairmont State's premier flight program is training the next generation of pilots to support the state's growing aviation sector, while its highly ranked nursing programs continue to fill critical healthcare roles across the region.
Fairmont State's commitment to community engagement is equally strong. The University leads dozens of outreach programs each year and provides essential support during times of crisis, such as shelter and services during the 2025 Father's Day Flood. Through cutting-edge initiatives like the Middle College program, Fairmont State is addressing the state's foster care challenges by offering stability and opportunity for youth, allowing them to earn college credit while completing high school.
Innovation is at the heart of Fairmont State's vision for the future. The University's 2025-2035 Strategic Vision aspires to make Fairmont State a Great Place to Learn, Work, and Call Home. This plan was developed through one of the most inclusive strategic planning processes in higher education, engaging students, faculty, staff, community partners, and legislators. Recognized by higher education consulting firm EAB for its collaborative approach, the Strategic Vision focuses on academic excellence, workforce readiness, and creating a vibrant campus that serves as a bedrock institution for all of West Virginia.
Fairmont State University will be at the Capitol on January 23 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., filling the Senate and House Halls as well as the Upper and Lower Rotundas. Stop by to learn how Fairmont State is driving progress and creating opportunities for West Virginia.
