Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just a tool, but is increasingly establishing itself as a 'new colleague'. However, alongside a wide range of opportunities, this also brings uncertainties and challenges - and many unanswered questions. The 'AI as a new colleague?' network, part of the 'University Association for the Training of Early-Career Researchers in Germany' (UniWinD), aims to create a forum for regular exchange in future. Paderborn University is a member of UniWinD through the Paderborn PhD & Postdoc Support Office and the Jenny Aloni Network for Early Career Researchers (JANE). PhD students and postdocs who are interested can complete the registration form to join the new AI network. To help with planning, please complete registration by 15 July.
Two agile formats are planned: regular online discussion sessions and small, topic-specific 'sprint' groups which - over a limited period - will produce concrete results that can subsequently be utilised by the entire UniWinD community. An existing team is responsible for coordinating the network, consolidating topics, planning activities, and ensuring the outcomes are documented. Representing Paderborn University, Dr. Alexandra Wiebke, Head of the Paderborn PhD & Postdoc Support Office and Managing Director of JANE, is a member of the team. She explains: "We want to pool the diversity of our perspectives and experiences to jointly provide guidance on working with AI. The aim is to provide practical AI building blocks for day-to-day work whilst also offering an open space where we can engage in a collegial exchange about the opportunities and challenges that AI brings as a new team member."
UniWinD is the only organisation in Germany dedicated exclusively to supporting PhD students and postdocs. In the "Postdoc Support Network", members discuss, amongst other things, training opportunities, career advice and support, fixed-term contract practices under the Academic Fixed-Term Contracts Act, and permanent positions in mid-level academic staff.
