WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44) introduced a resolution to recognize the week of September 14, 2026, as Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Week, in order to highlight the important contributions athletic administrators make to students, schools, and communities across the country.

Athletic administrators at middle and high schools are responsible for creating and overseeing school-based athletic programs that give young people opportunities to stay active, develop important life skills, build friendships, support their mental health, and succeed academically. Their leadership helps ensure that athletics remain an important part of a student's overall educational experience.

"As Co-Chair of the Youth Sports Caucus, I am proud to introduce this resolution which recognizes the dedicated athletic administrators who make school sports possible for millions of students," said Rep. Barragán. "Sports give young people an opportunity to develop discipline, confidence, teamwork, and resilience, while supporting their physical and mental well-being. Athletic administrators are the leaders who help create those opportunities and set students on a path toward success, both in school and beyond. For some, that journey may even lead to proudly representing our country at the Olympic and Paralympic Games."

"Athletic administrators, as the leaders of the largest department in many schools, need to have a wide range of abilities to properly accomplish this role, which is often done behind the scenes. This is why we are particularly deeply appreciative of Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (D-CA) and Congressman Don Bacon (R-NE) for leading this resolution recognizing the crucial roles interscholastic athletic administrators play in education-based athletic programs in our high schools and middle schools, participated in by over 8 million students in this country," said Phil Rison, Executive Director of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

The resolution recognizes the role interscholastic athletic administrators play in promoting the physical, mental, social, academic, and personal development of students. It also recognizes the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA), which represents more than 13,000 athletic administrators and works to prepare and support leaders in secondary school athletics.

Athletic administrators across the country provide leadership for over 8 million student-athletes. Every day, they dedicate significant time and effort to manage school athletic programs, promote student safety and well-being, and support the academic, athletic, and personal growth of the students in their care. Their responsibilities often extend well beyond the traditional school day, requiring long and unpredictable hours throughout the year.

This resolution serves as an opportunity to recognize and thank the athletic administrators who work behind the scenes to ensure students have access to safe, enriching, and high-quality athletic opportunities.

The following Members of Congress have co-sponsored the bill: Reps. Donald Bacon (R-NE), Don Davis (D-NC), and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.).
