Native plants are an important part of Encinitas' natural landscape, providing habitat for local wildlife, supporting pollinators and conserving water. This year, the City is highlighting their importance through new landscaping requirements, community recognition and an upcoming event.
In April, the Encinitas City Council adopted a Native Plant Ordinance, which took effect May 15, 2026. The ordinance requires qualifying private development projects to incorporate at least 50% Southern California native plants into landscaped areas, while qualifying City projects must use 100% native plants. Single-family residences are exempt. The ordinance supports the City's goals of protecting biodiversity, improving natural habitats and promoting sustainable landscaping.
At its October 14 meeting, the City Council also presented a proclamation recognizing Día de las Encinitas Celebrating Native Plants, highlighting the importance of native plants to our community and local environment.
Celebrate With Us on October 17!
Residents are invited to continue the celebration at a free community event at Leucadia Oaks Park. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just getting started, come explore the benefits of native plants, exchange plants and seeds, learn about native landscaping practices and connect with fellow community members.
