HWY 20 Traveler Information - UPDATE Sept 10, 2025

Portions of the west Chilcotin are experiencing significant wildfire activity, resulting in closures and restrictions along Highway 20. These measures are in place to ensure public safety and to support ongoing firefighting and emergency response efforts. The wildfire situation continues to evolve, and conditions may change with little notice. Bella Coola, a remote area with limited resources, remains accessible at present; however, all travellers are strongly urged to carefully assess the necessity of their journey, as non-essential travel can add pressure to local services focused on wildfire response and community safety. If your travel plans include affected areas, consider deferring your visit.

Highway 20 Travel Status

• Highway 20 is experiencing closures and alternating single lane traffic to support firefighting efforts and address visibility concerns caused by smoke. Travellers should be prepared for delays, intermittent closures, or alternating traffic. Please ensure you have extra water and snacks with you.
• There are Evacuation Alerts and Orders in place for the safety of residents and emergency crews working on several wildfires between Williams Lake and Bella Coola.
• Wildfires often displace livestock (cattle and horses) and wildlife, which may be present on or near the highway. Please use extra care and slow down as needed.
• No stopping is permitted on roadways in evacuation order areas or on portions of the highway where there are piloting vehicles.
• We encourage everyone to travel safely and make informed decisions about their travel plans. If your travel plans include affected areas, consider deferring your visit. All travellers should plan accordingly, be prepared for delays, and monitor official sources for current conditions and travel advisories.
