WASHINGTON-U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the statement below following the Bolivian presidential and legislative elections that took place on Sunday.
"We congratulate President-elect Rodrigo Paz, the recently elected members of the Bolivian national legislature, and the Bolivian people on their historic election. These elections demonstrate the will of the Bolivian people to chart a new course for their country and mark a victory for peaceful, democratic change in the region.
"Bolivia and the United States share significant diplomatic, economic and security interests, and it is our hope that this election will serve as a starting point to deepen those connections. The United States and Bolivia have not exchanged ambassadors since 2008. To strengthen our relationship, we support efforts to upgrade our diplomatic presence in the country. We look forward to working together in a bipartisan manner with Secretary Rubio and the incoming Bolivian government to strengthen the ties of friendship between our nations."
