CU’s NanoExplorers summer academy offers STEM activities to HS students

High school students who are interested in science - and who may even be aspiring to careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics - are encouraged to apply for "NanoExplorers: A High School Summer STEM Academy" to be offered at Cameron University this summer.

The residential summer science academy for teens entering grades 9-12 this fall will take place June 14-19 and 21-26 on CU's Lawton campus. There is no cost to attend, but participation is limited to 28 students, who must be Oklahoma residents.

The program will introduce several aspects of chemistry and physics through projects designed to stimulate creativity. These hands-on activities demonstrate the concepts of nanotechnology, as well as provide information about career opportunities in that field.

All project supplies and equipment, instruction by CU faculty, meals, housing and transportation to scheduled activities will be provided. These include trips to Analytic Research Laboratories in Oklahoma City, along with visits to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Frontier City and Laugh Out Loud.

Students can apply for the program at https://www.cameron.edu/chem-phys-eng/beyond-the-classroom/nanoexplorers. Registration closes April 15.

NanoExplorers is one of 14 summer science academies funded by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. Each explores the latest trends in science, technology, engineering and math through fun, hands-on activities and innovative technology as students experiment both in the classroom and outdoors. Many academies also include field trips to some of the state's top companies and science facilities.

"STEM education is essential to driving innovation, strengthening our economy, and opening doors to highdemand careers," said Chancellor Sean Burrage. "Our summer academies give middle and high school students the chance to explore STEM fields firsthand and experience campus life. Students who participate in these academies are more likely to pursue higher education and earn a degree."

The academies are not exclusively for top students but instead are designed to give all students an opportunity to increase their interest and confidence in STEM fields and, ultimately, expand their career and educational aspirations.
