"Republicans are lying when they say the harms of this law will not be felt in the near term."
Monthly Tally of Hospitals, Patients, and Health Care Workers Getting Harmed Continues to Grow
Text of Report
Washington, D.C. - Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., released the latest monthly installment of a report detailing how Republicans' rushed Big Ugly Bill has destabilized American health care by slashing more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). According to the Congressional Budget Office, these draconian health care cuts will terminate health insurance for roughly 15 million Americans.
"Republicans keep trying to gaslight Americans into thinking that Trumpcare actually works," Wyden said. "The reality is Trump and his Republican allies in Congress are taking a sledgehammer to the American health care system. Every month, essential health care providers are shutting down critical services and watching their balance sheets with dread. It's time to put a stop to Trumpcare so that families aren't forced to choose between lifesaving care, food, or rent."
While Republicans claim their bill infuses resources into rural health care, Wyden's report underscores how every month, more hospitals, including in rural communities, are shutting down, clinics are closing, workers are being laid off, services are being canceled, and families are paying higher out-of-pocket costs:
Hospitals, clinics, and other essential services are closing their doors. Each day, patients are losing lifeline care because of Republicans' disastrous actions, forcing hospitals, clinics, and other essential services like maternity care to shut down.
October 13, 2025: Two freestanding emergency rooms in Hunt County, Texas, closed, and 43 employees have lost their jobs. The hospital board cited the growing number of uninsured patients and declining government payments as financial stressors that led to the closure.
October 31, 2025: Maine Family Planning closed the doors of its primary care practices, which offered services in Ellsworth, Houlton, and Presque Isle, citing Trumpcare's Medicaid cuts.
Essential workers are taking pay cuts or losing their jobs altogether. Republicans are driving frontline workers out of a paycheck while their patients lose access to care.
October 14, 2025: Lucile Packard Children's Hospital will lay off 87 people, citing economic uncertainty, "regulatory headwinds, and significant budgetary consequences."
Americans are shouldering higher health care costs. If Republicans fail to extend the ACA tax credits, millions of Americans will face skyrocketing health care premiums. Thanks to Trumpcare, families will be forced to choose between paying higher out-of-pocket costs or forgoing the health care they need.
October 14, 2025: California residents receiving ACA tax credits will see their health insurance premiums double. As a result of Republicans' refusal to extend the ACA tax credits, 400,000 Californians are expected to go without insurance.
October 27, 2025: In Colorado, 225,000 individuals will see their health insurance costs double, while approximately 75,000 people will lose coverage altogether.
Wyden has been a leader in the Senate opposing Trump and Republicans' Big Ugly bill, which drives up costs and puts health care further out of reach for Americans nationwide. Last month, Wyden led his colleagues in calling on Trump to stop hiding health insurance premiums from American families, just days ahead of open enrollment. Also in October, Wyden and Budget Committee Ranking Member Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., called on Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz to resolve Medicaid and Medicare chaos as Oregon implements Trumpcare.
