Book launch: Real Estate Investment and ESG. A guide and toolkit for practitioners across the globe

January 20, 2026

The real estate investment sector is experiencing a major transformation as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues gain global prominence. Once a niche concern, ESG is now central to investment strategy, risk management, and value creation, driven by the increasing demand for responsibility and transparency from investors, regulators, and communities. At the same time, public debate has never been louder about whether ESG is necessary, affordable or too bureaucratic.

The book, newly published by Haufe in English - Real Estate Investment and ESG. A guide and toolkit for practitioners across the globe - provides practical guidance for investors, asset managers, legal advisors, and policymakers seeking to understand and apply ESG considerations in real estate investment. It provides a comprehensive overview of ESG content, frameworks and systematic implementation. Combining global, regional and local perspectives, it supports a holistic understanding of ESG through a practical, decision-oriented toolkit, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

The book is divided into six chapters:

  • Global ESG dynamics and standards
  • The real estate investment market, ESG and investment, finance, greenwashing
  • Due diligence, valuation and the user perspective
  • Deep dives into key aspects of ESG: CRREM, water, brownfield investments, insurance and climate change, and AI
  • Contracts, procurement, and regulatory frameworks
  • Global, regional and local perspectives, spanning Africa, Asia, Europe, the US and Latin America

Sabine Wieduwilt, a partner in Dentons' Real Estate practice in Frankfurt, edited the book, with contributions from 30 lawyers, real estate market experts, and ESG specialists from around the world. Among the co-authors were 13 lawyers and professionals from Dentons. (For the full list of authors, please refer to the appendix.)

"With this book, we want to support market participants to gather ESG content from different perspectives and decide for themselves which content makes sense to implement in their projects," said Sabine Wieduwilt.
