Spring Publix Serves Week: Supporting our communities and the environment

We've teamed up with local groups throughout our operating area during our first Publix Serves Week of 2026 to complete service projects that benefit the environment.

April 21, 2026 - The environmental landscape across our eight states of operation is as diverse as the communities we serve. The places where our associates live and work are also home to unique ecosystems that help provide drinking water for our communities and places for birds, fish, wildlife and a variety of trees and plants to grow and thrive.

We're proud to focus our spring Publix Serves Week efforts on supporting the environment. In all, nearly 8,000 associates are volunteering for more than 160 projects companywide. Here are just a few ways we're serving our communities in each state across our footprint.

Alabama

With its northern portion graced by the Appalachian foothills, to the vast river system in the heart of the state and famous white sand beaches to the south, Alabama boasts a remarkable list of landscapes that set it apart in the southeastern United States. Throughout the week, our associates will be taking part in volunteer opportunities across Alabama that include

  • cleaning up trails, removing debris and laying mulch at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham and
  • beautifying Jeremiah's Community Garden in Tuscaloosa by pulling weeds, trimming and planting trees, and landscaping the grounds.

Florida

With its tapestry of features like extensive wetlands, unique coastal ecosystems and coral reefs, Florida's habitats not only show off its natural beauty, but protect the shoreline and the numerous birds, fish and wildlife that call the state home. During Publix Serves Week, our associates will be volunteering across the state, including

  • taking part in a marine debris beach cleanup in Navarre through the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center
  • assisting 4Roots in Orlando by helping with harvesting, weeding, building fences and hauling compost and
  • working with the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne by cleaning up a shell site to prepare for the upcoming reef-building season.

Georgia

From towering mountains to expansive lowlands, Georgia is home to a variety of habitats. There are dramatic elevations created by the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northeast part of the state and in the southern part of the state, coastal plains and numerous wetlands. Our associates will be serving their communities through volunteer efforts throughout Georgia, including

  • rehabilitating the trail at Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy in Marietta to make it more accessible for hikers and
  • improving the grounds at the D.A. Turner YMCA in Columbus by spreading mulch, building a swing set and other beautification work.

Kentucky

The state known for the Kentucky Derby and its bourbon also boasts an impressive amount of natural diversity and environmental significance. This includes the world's longest cave system, Mammoth Cave National Park, expansive forests that blanket much of the state, and prairies dominated by tall grasses that serve as a vital habitat for birds, reptiles, mammals and more. Our associates will be supporting events in the Bluegrass State like

  • cleaning the lake and the areas around it at The Parklands of Floyds Fork in Louisville, Kentucky, and
  • helping visitors at Gatton Park on the Town Branch in Lexington, Kentucky, explore the park and also help record observations of plants and animals they encounter through a new app.

North Carolina

North Carolina is renowned for its diverse environmental ecosystems. This includes being the home of the highest peaks in the eastern U.S. with the Appalachian Mountains, lush forests of longleaf pines and popular barrier island destinations, such as the Outer Banks. Not only do these features offer scenic views, but they also protect the coastline and provide a home to a wide range of plants and wildlife. Some events that our associates will be taking part in across North Carolina include

  • planting spring vegetables and flowers along with cleaning the grounds at Cape Fear Botanical Garden in Fayetteville and
  • helping to improve the green spaces in downtown Charlotte by picking up litter with Envision Charlotte and Keep Charlotte Beautiful.

South Carolina

The state has landscapes that include the rising Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwest, breathtaking waterfalls and expansive southern coastal plains with fertile soil that supports a variety of plant life. In South Carolina's lowlands, cypress swamps can be found full of wildlife. Publix Serves Week events in South Carolina include

  • planting new fruit bushes, laying mulch and removing overgrowth and debris at Lincoln Park in Columbia and
  • ensuring that wood ducks have a spot to nest by clearing trees out of wetlands at Myrtle Beach State Park.

Tennessee

From the lush Great Smoky Mountains to extensive river basins to old-growth forests, Tennessee has a wide range of environmental habitats. Flowing through the heart of the state, the Tennessee River supports ecosystems and provides vital resources to the nearby communities and wildlife. The river basins create nutrient-rich lands that are important for many plant and animal species. Two of the events that our associates who work in Tennessee will be participating in are

  • cleaning up the waterways for boaters, fishers and swimmers at Long Hunter State Park in suburban Nashville and
  • clearing invasive plants to make room for native ones at Audubon Acres in Chattanooga.

Virginia

This state is home to extensive coastal plains that stretch along its eastern border. These marshes create crucial buffers from storm surge and provide access to the Chesapeake Bay, shaping the local habitats and supporting fishing, boating and recreation in the area. Virginia has vibrant and varied environmental features throughout the state. Together, our associates will be serving their communities through volunteer efforts, including

  • working with Keeping Virginia Beautiful to collect litter along the roads in Richmond and
  • participating in a park cleanup at First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach, which includes a campground and beach access.

Our associates are passionate about serving our customers, communities and the environment. Our spring Publix Serves Week runs through April 26. In September, our second Publix Serves Week supports organizations feeding our neighbors in need.
