'Hamas' announcement that they are willing to release all hostages is a positive step that could contribute to a final ceasefire. It is also important that Hamas, in their statement, signals readiness to hand over control of Gaza to an independent governing committee and does not reject the possibility of an international stabilisation force,' says Eide.
'All parties must seize the opportunity presented by the American peace plan and do what they can to resolve the conflict. This is what the long-suffering population of Gaza, the hostages, and all those affected by the conflict deserve.
I strongly urge Israel to halt its military operations in Gaza and ensure unhindered access for humanitarian assistance to the civilian population.'
While much work remains to be done to further specify the peace plan, it represents an important step in the right direction.
It is crucial not to lose sight of the ultimate goal: a lasting two-state solution, in which both Palestinians and Israelis can live in peace and security, side by side, in their own independent states.'
