Arista Networks (ANET) sells the network switches that link computers together. Its stock has outpaced the S&P 500 for five consecutive years. Investors often view a record like that as evidence of an exceptional business. Out of about 480 large U.S. stocks, how many would you guess did the same?
How Rare Is Arista's Winning Streak?
The answer is 10 out of the 484 current S&P 500 members with five years of prices. Arista belongs to that small group. Before accounting for dividends, its share price advanced more than the index in each of the last five years.
| Twelve months to | The stock | S&P 500 |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 2022 | +41% | -13% |
| Oct 2023 | +56% | +14% |
| Oct 2024 | +109% | +34% |
| Oct 2025 | +57% | +14% |
| Oct 2026 | +33% | +19% |
Price changes over each twelve months, dividends excluded.
People generally assume a typical stock roughly matches the broader index. The data shows otherwise. Only 36% of S&P 500 stocks beat the index in the latest twelve months. Outperforming the market is already an uncommon result in a typical year, making a five-year streak rare.
Could A Streak Like This Be Luck?
A large sample size of 484 stocks means a few will string together long winning streaks by chance alone. During a typical year of Arista's run, about four in ten of these stocks beat the index.
A random draw illustrates the probability. If you pull four in ten of those 484 names out of a hat each year to represent the winners, repeating the process five years in a row leaves you with about five names. Five companies would achieve a five-year winning streak through pure probability, with no skill involved at all.
The actual total is 10 companies, about double what a random outcome would produce. Some of those 10 names are there on merit, while others benefited from luck. A rising share price alone cannot distinguish between the two.
Did Arista's Profit Grow Through The Streak?
Yes. Arista's net income rose in every year of the streak. The underlying business generates most of its revenue by selling products such as Etherlink switches, with services making up the rest.
Over the whole period, net income rose 416%. The share price rose 852%, which is about twice as much. Arista therefore backed its market streak with a growing business, even though the share price climbed further than the profit. The track record does not settle the debate between skill and luck. It does, however, give investors a tangible cause they can verify.
What To Watch Instead Of The Streak
The underlying sales figures are still expanding rapidly. Arista reported that revenue rose 37.7% from a year earlier in the second quarter of fiscal 2026. During the earnings call on August 4, management raised its full-year outlook to 40% revenue growth.
Profit is also still rising, though the pace has slowed. Net income rose 20% in the latest twelve months, down from 26% the year before.
A market winning streak only describes the share price. The actual profit describes the fundamental business. Arista's profit growth is the figure to watch when the company reports third-quarter results on November 3, 2026.
Does This Mean You Should Act On ANET?
Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.
There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
