BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) issued the following statement:

"For nearly two long and painful years, Americans have watched in helpless horror as our neighbors continue to be stolen from their homes and shot in the street by agents of the Trump Administration. Last night's attempted murder of a New Yorker and his five-year-old son was far from the first disgraceful incident of its kind, but it must be the last. We demand ICE leave our city immediately, and we are too disgusted and too tired to accept any delay. While the abuses we have seen have shocked our collective conscience and sickened our society, we cannot say that we are surprised to see them fall on our communities. I fought bitterly to prevent Donald Trump and his congressional lackeys from empowering ICE with hundreds of billions in taxpayer dollars, because these vile crimes were only ever an inevitability under this president's watch. In fact, these depravities are the only promise Donald Trump has ever kept. Every incident is just another dreadful reminder of the resources that could have been spent pushing our society towards a brighter future. Not pulling the darkest chapters of our past back to the present.

"ICE has proven itself nothing more than a weapon for the wicked to tear away at our multiracial democracy. It is a broken agency, built by and for broken men. At every level, its personnel believe in nothing but the artificial power Republicans have given them. The only path forward is to rip it away entirely, before ICE has any opportunity to further its relentless escalation of violence and despair in America. Secretary Mullin must see that it is immediately removed from sanctuary cities like New York City and all others his agents have invaded. He must support the investigation and subsequent prosecution of his agents who have made a living harassing, abusing, and beating decent people trying to find their way in our nation. And he must ensure the New Yorker whom his agents grievously wounded yesterday is able to heal without any threat to his care or status in this country. If he does not, he will find himself following in the footsteps of his disgraced predecessor expeditiously. The choice is his - the power is ours. For the people we cannot help but love and the communities they cannot help but hate, we must use it."
