Lawler, Five Rockland Town Supervisors, More Local Officials Press White House to Protect Haitian TPS Holders

Pearl River, N.Y. - 9/9/25… This week, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17), joined by a bipartisan group of five Rockland County Town Supervisors, sent a letter to President Trump urging the Administration to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian citizens.

The letter, signed by Congressman Lawler, Rockland County Executive Ed Day, New York State Senators Bill Weber and Pete Harckham, Assemblyman Aaron Wieder, Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann, Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, Stony Point Supervisor Jim Monaghan, and Orangetown Councilmember Teresa Kenny, expresses the broad local support for protecting Haitian TPS holders.

The officials pointed to escalating gang violence, human rights abuses, and the worsening security crisis in Haiti as reasons the extension is necessary to ensure that law-abiding Haitian nationals in the United States are not forced to return to unsafe conditions.

"The U.S. has a long history with Haiti as well as the Haitian people. That is why over 1,000,000 individuals of Haitian descent now live in the United States. In the Hudson Valley, this community has contributed heavily to our culture, economy, and politics. We have a vibrant and thriving Haitian population in the area who we know share a common bond with the Americans and other immigrant communities that live here as well," wrote the officials.

In addition to calling for an extension of TPS, the officials urged the Administration to prioritize efforts to restore law and order in Haiti through coordination with international partners.

Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He was rated the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress, 8th overall, surpassing dozens of committee chairs.
