Washburn University Celebrates Family Weekend Sept. 18-19

Topeka, Kan. - Washburn University will host its annual Family Weekend Sept. 18-19, a time-honored tradition for the Washburn community. Classes have been in session for more than a month and it's a good occasion to officially invite students' families and loved ones back to campus for a visit. Faculty, staff and their families often join in on the fun as well.

The public is welcome to attend these events, and tickets are required for the football game.

"One of the special things about Washburn is our community," said Dr. Kim Chestnut, vice president for student life, Washburn University. "Family Weekend is a great opportunity for us to pause to visit with our families and friends, enjoy activities on the Memorial Union lawn and tailgate before the football game. Some of those true college experiences."

Friday, Sept. 18

Magician Walter King Jr. "The Spellbinder"
7 p.m., (Doors open at 6 p.m.) White Concert Hall

Experience the Magic of Walter King Jr. aka "The Spellbinder," the first African American illusionist to perform in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Born and raised on the Westside of Chicago, Walter is a self-taught illusionist/magician and is the first to combine multi-disciplines of Hip-Hop dance, music and theater with the visual art of illusion and magic. His most popular illusion is floating a woman in mid-air. King, an award-winning illusionist, has performed for nearly four decades throughout the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean Islands. During the late 2000s, he was named as one of the "Great Performers of Illinois" by the IAC (Illinois Arts Council.)

Saturday, Sept. 19

Activities on the East Union Lawn
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Join the Washburn community for live music, caricatures and calligraphy, henna artists, inflatables, ice cream bars and cotton candy before the football game! The Mulvane Art Museum will also have an art-making station with make-and-take art projects.

Football vs. University of Central Oklahoma
12 p.m., Yager Stadium
