SAN DIEGO - Mayor Todd Gloria issued the following statement today regarding the City of San Diego's preparations for Tropical Storm Rachel:

"San Diego has been preparing for severe El Niño weather for months, and that work is now being put into action as Tropical Storm Rachel approaches.

"Departments across the City have worked together to identify vulnerable areas, strengthen emergency plans and coordinate with regional partners. City crews are clearing storm drains and channels, installing protective beach berms, staging pumps and other equipment, monitoring coastal conditions and preparing to respond to flooding, downed trees and other storm-related emergencies.

"We have also worked to give San Diegans the information and resources they need to prepare. Through our Stay Ready, San Diego campaign, we launched sandiego.gov/ElNino , where residents can check flood-risk and climate-hazard maps, find sandbag locations and learn how to prepare their homes, businesses and families. We have also provided information in multiple languages and conducted direct outreach to properties in areas at greater risk of flooding.

"Please sign up for emergency notifications at AlertSanDiego.org , download the Genasys Protect app, know your safest routes and prepare an emergency kit with at least three days of supplies. Clear leaves and debris from gutters near your property, secure outdoor items and turn off irrigation before the rain arrives. Most importantly, never drive or walk through floodwater, and follow all road closures and instructions from public-safety officials.

"Report flooding, downed trees and other storm-related issues through Get It Done or by calling 619-527-7500 . Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.

"The City is prepared, but keeping San Diego safe requires all of us. Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay Ready, San Diego."
