Cyclone Harry has hit Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria hard: in addition to causing extensive damage to infrastructure and the economy and severely disrupting essential services and mobility, it has also triggered a landslide in Niscemi, leaving many locals homeless.

National, regional and European authorities must act in a quick, coordinated and effective manner to help the affected communities through this critical situation.

In the light of the above, could the Commission answer the following questions:

  • 1.Have the conditions for requesting the activation of the Solidarity Fund and other EU financial instruments with a view to financing emergency and reconstruction operations been met, and will the Commission push for the Union Civil Protection Mechanism to be triggered?
  • 2.Does the Commission agree that it should propose extending the scope of the Regional Emergency Support to Reconstruction (RESTORE) Regulation - which provides additional assistance for Member States affected by natural disasters - to cover 2026?
  • 3.What further measures will the Commission take, including in coordination with the Italian authorities, to repair essential infrastructure, make it disaster-resistant and bolster the affected areas' resilience to extreme weather events in the medium and long term?
