Stop the Bleed: Cut Costs, Not Care Gets Candidates on the Record on High Cost of Health Care Ahead of Midterms

Families USA Action's Stop the Bleed campaign and key business and labor partners demand answers on corporate accountability on health care affordability

WASHINGTON, D.C. - With health care costs ranking as voters' top concern going into the midterm elections, Families USA Action today released the first wave of candidate responses to a single, urgent question: "What will you do to hold health care corporations accountable for high costs?"

Many candidates and current lawmakers across the country have answered the question as part of the Stop the Bleed: Cut Costs, Not Care campaign. With Election Day approaching, Families USA Action and partners are redoubling their efforts to get candidates to say where they stand on this crucial top-of-mind issue. In a midterm election year where voters across the political spectrum are overwhelmingly concerned with the cost of health care, Families USA Action has teamed up with partners and organizations in all 50 states to get candidates and sitting elected officials on the record about how they will tackle high health care costs.

"Anyone running for office this year, regardless of party, must be clear about how they plan to take on high health costs and the health care corporations that charge such inflated and irrational prices," said Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA Action. "Voters are mad at health care corporations that charge more just because they can, but they are furious at Congress for not taking action. The Stop the Bleed campaign is forcing candidates to be clear and commit to concrete policies to lower health care prices."

The responses collected so far reflect a wide range of ideas to bring down health care costs - from big structural reforms like enacting a Medicare for All system overhaul, to taking on private equity-backed middlemen and big corporate health systems, to building on recently enacted progress, such as expanding Medicare drug price negotiation, and extending caps on insulin into the commercial market.

Responses from lawmakers began rolling in as early as April of this year, and candidates continue to respond with their priorities to improve health care affordability. Each response will be added to the website on a rolling basis through the November election.

Launched in January, the Stop the Bleed: Cut Costs, Not Care campaign has activated grassroots organizations representing patients, consumers, workers, employers, providers and more, all pushing for greater accountability from Washington on health care costs - and demanding that candidates put affordability at the center of their campaigns.
