Students in Southeast Missouri State University's aviation program connected with industry professionals and explored career pathways during a visit from Republic Airways at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport on April 10.
The visit served as an information session, recruitment event and networking opportunity for students pursuing careers as professional pilots. Representatives from Republic Airways met with students to share insights into the airline industry, discuss career opportunities and outline potential pathways from collegiate training to the flight deck.
Republic Airways is one of the largest regional airlines in North America, operating more than 1,300 daily flights in partnership with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. The company maintains a fleet of more than 300 Embraer aircraft and connects passengers to more than 100 cities across the U.S., Canada and beyond.
"Opportunities like this are incredibly valuable for our students," said Miranda Sullivan, director of aviation at SEMO. "We work to connect airline partners directly with our students which allows them better understand the industry, build professional relationships and see a clear pathway from the classroom to a career in aviation."
For students, the opportunity to engage directly with industry professionals offered both insight and encouragement.
"Having a potential future employer come speak and interact with us is very encouraging," said Emma Summers, an aviation student at SEMO. "It gave me real insight into the company's environment and culture, as well as the airline industry as a whole. Opportunities like this help us build connections and open doors that can jumpstart our careers."
Students who attended gained firsthand insight into hiring expectations, pilot career progression and the evolving needs of the aviation industry. The event also provided valuable networking opportunities, allowing students to engage directly with a potential future employer.
SEMO's aviation programs are designed to prepare students for in-demand careers in a rapidly growing field. With strong industry partnerships and hands-on training at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport, students begin flight experiences early in their academic careers and can build the certifications and experience needed to enter the workforce.
Demand for pilots continues to rise nationwide, with significant workforce needs driven by industry growth and retirements. SEMO's programs are structured to meet that demand, equipping graduates with the technical skills and professional experience sought by leading airlines.
Events like the Republic Airways visit highlight SEMO's commitment to connecting students with real-world opportunities and preparing them to succeed in the aviation industry.
