What began as an opportunity during the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into a customer-centered small business serving communities across the Metro East. With guidance from the Illinois Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, RIP Outdoor Pest Solutions, founded by Rebecca Harper, is a locally owned pest control company specializing in outdoor nuisance pests, driven by a simple but often overlooked mission: helping people feel comfortable in their own space.
With more than 25 years of experience in the service industry and a professional background in marketing, sales, and graphic design, Harper has built a career centered on people. That same people-first mindset now defines her approach to pest control.
The idea for RIP Outdoor Pest Solutions emerged while Harper worked alongside a volunteer who launched a mosquito control franchise. Initially focused on marketing support, her role quickly expanded to managing systems, operations and day-to-day business functions.
After several years of hands-on experience, the team reached a pivotal decision-whether to continue operating under a franchise model or establish an independent business. Choosing independence allowed Harper to build a company that more closely reflected her values and commitment to personalized service.
"We realized we didn't want to treat customers like numbers," Harper said. "We wanted to build relationships and provide a higher level of care. Our goal is to help people enjoy their space-whether that's time with family, hosting events, or simply relaxing outside-without being bothered by pests."
Now in its second year of operation, RIP Outdoor Pest Solutions focuses on treating common outdoor and structural nuisance pests, including mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, ants, stink bugs, and many others. The business operates as a home-based company out of Glen Carbon, deploying a small fleet of service vehicles to residential and commercial properties throughout the Metro East. Services are offered seasonally from April through October.
Like many first-time entrepreneurs, Harper entered business ownership with determination but limited experience navigating the startup process. Support from the SBDC proved instrumental in helping her establish and grow the business.
"I honestly wouldn't know what to do without the SBDC," Harper shared. "From forming my LLC to understanding insurance, operations, and overall business structure, they guided me every step of the way. They didn't just provide information - they gave me direction and confidence."
Through the SBDC, Harper gained access to vital resources, including business planning assistance, professional referrals, and ongoing advising. The flexibility and responsiveness of SBDC advisors allowed her to balance building a business while working part-time and raising a family.
"They worked with my schedule and were always there when I had questions," she added. "As a single owner and a single parent, that kind of support made all the difference."
Today, RIP Outdoor Pest Solutions continues to grow steadily, built on a foundation of trust, service excellence, and personal connection.
"Rebecca is deeply committed to excellence, ensuring every customer receives the highest standard of care," said Jo Ann Di Maggio May, Director of the Illinois SBDC for the Metro East at SIUE. "Her diligence is evident in her results, and her openness to mentorship has made our work together highly productive. We are proud to continue supporting her business."
