Inbound I-55 overnight full closures

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing repairs to the bridge carrying Black Road over Interstate 55, in Shorewood, two overnight full closures will be required this week on the inbound expressway. The closures are necessary to safely remove and install steel support beams over the expressway. ​

Thursday, Oct. 1

  • Starting at 8 p.m. Thursday, inbound I-55 gradually will be reduced to one lane just before U.S. 52 (Jefferson Street). ​
  • Between midnight and 5 a.m., the inbound lanes will be fully closed between U.S. 52 and U.S. 30, with traffic diverted onto U.S. 52.
  • A detour will direct inbound traffic to exit the expressway at U.S. 52 (west) to Illinois 59 (north) to Illinois 126 (Main Street) east to access inbound I-55.
  • All lanes that were closed overnight will reopen by 5 a.m. Friday. Outbound I-55 will not be impacted.

Saturday, Oct. 3

  • Starting at 9 p.m. Saturday, inbound I-55 gradually will be reduced to one lane just before U.S. 52.
  • Between midnight and 7 a.m., the inbound lanes will be fully closed between U.S. 52 and U.S. 30, with traffic diverted onto U.S. 52.
  • A detour will direct inbound traffic to exit the expressway at U.S. 52 (west) to Illinois 59 (north) to Illinois 126 (east) to access inbound I-55.
  • All lanes that were closed overnight will reopen by 7 a.m. Sunday. Outbound I-55 will not be impacted.

All schedules are subject to change due to multiple factors, including weather. Any updates will be shared with the public as far in advance as possible.

The overall project is expected to be completed in late October.

To complete the work, the right lane on eastbound Black Road will be closed approaching the bridge. The public also should expect various overnight lane closures in both directions of I-55 from U.S. 52 (Jefferson Street) to Black Road. At least one lane in each direction will remain open during construction.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
