What Is Going On With United Airlines Stock

United Airlines (UAL) stock trades at 9.5 times earnings. That multiple is less than half the 22.6 times for the median S&P 500 company. Over the past year, United shares returned 5.4%, trailing the 15.0% for the S&P 500, even as the airline's sales and net income rose. The low price is a gift only if United keeps selling more and earns more on each dollar of sales again. So is United still selling more?

United Is Growing Sales Faster Than Most Companies

Yes. United's revenue rose 12.3% in the twelve months to September 30, 2026, outpacing the 8.5% for the median S&P 500 company. The result also tops the airline's own 7.7% average across its last three such periods.

Revenue grew 17.4% in fiscal Q3 2026, compared with 2.6% in the same quarter a year earlier. On the October 21 call, management said business revenue rose 22% in the quarter, against 16% for leisure. Loyalty revenue rose 17%, accompanied by a 15% increase in payments from Chase. On sales, United is delivering.

United's Operating Margin Has Slipped

United is not yet earning more on each dollar of sales. The airline recorded an operating margin of 6.4% in the twelve months to September 30, 2026, down from 8.8% a year earlier. That figure also falls below its 7.9% average across the last three such periods. The latest quarter reflects the same pattern, landing at 6.9% in fiscal Q3 2026 against 8.7% a year earlier. Over the twelve months to September 30, 2026, operating income fell to $4.17 billion from $5.17 billion, so costs grew faster than sales.

Management said fuel expense was $1.8 billion higher in fiscal Q3 2026 than a year earlier because fuel prices climbed, and United won back 72% of that rise. United's cost per seat mile excluding fuel rose 7.8% in the quarter, a rate that now includes the full cost of its flight attendant deal.

What United Plans To Do About Fuel And Costs

Management has set a high bar for 2027. The airline aims to win back 100% of the rise in fuel costs in 2027, and expects to win back about the same share of that rise in fiscal Q4 2026 as in Q3. Executives target growth of 2% to 3% in cost per seat mile excluding fuel in 2027. United reported a pretax margin of 6.2% in fiscal Q3 2026, and management's goal is double-digit pretax margins.

To get there in 2027, management said United probably needs lower fuel, lower industry capacity or airlines that keep accepting emptier planes in return for higher fares. The company expects fuel to stay elevated for all of 2027, and said the revenue lift from adding Starlink Wi-Fi to its jets is probably not enough on its own. By management's own account, part of the fix lies outside United's control.

What A Buyer Of United Stock Is Betting On

United's low P/E comes from its net income, which rose to $3.58 billion in the twelve months to September 30, 2026, from $3.29 billion a year earlier. Operating income fell over the same period, so that rise came from items below operating income, not from the core airline business. Management expects fiscal Q4 2026 earnings per share of $0.50 to $1.50, against the $2.54 a share it said United earned on the same measure in fiscal Q3.

United's debt is also about equal to its market value. Total debt equaled 100.8% of its market value at the October 27, 2026 close, against 19.4% for the S&P 500.

Buying at this price is therefore less a bet that the market missed a sound business than a bet that United fixes a real problem: fares that keep up with fuel, and costs that slow. United is still selling more, but it is not yet earning more on each dollar of sales. Its operating margin in the fiscal Q4 2026 report, expected in January 2027, is the number to watch.
