The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is revising the 2026 total allowable catch (TAC) amounts for Pacific cod in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA), effective 0001 hours, Alaska local time, January 1, 2026, according to Jonathan M. Kurland, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.
NMFS is decreasing the 2026 Pacific cod TAC from 22,235 mt to 21,826 mt to account for an increase in the guideline harvest level set for the State of Alaska waters Pacific cod fishery in the Western Regulatory Area of the GOA. NMFS is also adjusting the 2026 sector allocations and seasonal apportionments of Pacific cod TACs in the GOA. These adjustments are necessary because NMFS has determined the TACs are incorrectly specified and the adjustments will ensure that harvest of Pacific cod in the GOA does not exceed biological limits for the stock, as established by the best scientific information available for Pacific cod in the GOA. These adjustments are taken in accordance with 50 CFR 679.25. The adjustments are also necessary to ensure that the Pacific cod TACs are seasonally apportioned among sectors consistent with Steller sea lion protection measures.
