Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith and M. Sanjayan, chief executive officer of The New York Climate Exchange, met in Chancellors Hall at Stony Brook Southampton on August 28 for the latest "Southampton Dialogues" event, discussing the innovative climate campus planned for Governors Island.
The project, anchored by Stony Brook among a global network of partners, is expected to be a 250,000-square-foot campus where scientists, entrepreneurs and policymakers can research, innovate and collaborate under one roof. Construction could start as early as later this year, with the campus expected to open in 2029.
Goldsmith, who chairs the nonprofit's board, said the university's involvement reflects a broader shift away from academic research conducted in isolation. She said researchers are moving past the traditional boundaries of scholarship to confront a problem that requires immediate action.
"Sanjayan is an exceptional leader who understands the importance of the mission that The Exchange has to address this threat to humanity at the speed and scale at which the climate is changing," Goldsmith said.
On June 1, Sanjayan, a conservation biologist, came to the role after leading Conservation International. He said he was drawn to Governors Island, positioned in New York Harbor near the Statue of Liberty, because of its symbolic as well as practical location for the campus. The climate campus's design has already won architectural recognition, and organizers say it will include the first large-scale mass timber building constructed in New York City.
"Near the Statue of Liberty, we get to build another portal to the new world - a gateway to the world we want to live in," Sanjayan said.
He argued that dedicated space for climate collaboration remains rare even as other fields, such as artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure like data centers, attract enormous investment.
"There is no space in the world that I know of that is dedicated to 24/7 programming to convene to bring together to ideate around climate change," Sanjayan said. "It'll be a shining example of what the best of our country has to offer to ourselves and to the world."
The Exchange's work is organized around three areas: Climate data stewardship will focus on managing ocean and satellite information, often gathered in formats few scientists can interpret, and making it usable for disaster planning and business forecasting; urban resilience projects will treat the island itself as a testing ground for solutions like carbon sequestration, low-emission algae-based concrete, and more; and climate finance work is meant to move investment in community resilience from the billions into the trillions - a shift Goldsmith linked to private industry.
"Every company around the world knows that climate change affects their business, whether it's just blockchain, how climate impacts the products and services that they offer, or the infrastructure where they're operating," Goldsmith said. "So, we need to be part of the solutions for climate change, because it affects everyone's bottom line - and so [industry, community, and government] will want to partner with us."
For Sanjayan, the campus's value depends on what happens once the research is communicated and whether the gap can be closed between research produced inside universities and the needs of cities already contending with rising temperatures and coastal risk. "The most important thing is we get these solutions out through these partners," Sanjayan added.
Governors Island is also meant to function as a classroom. Students from a network of 12 educational institutions will one day be able to live on the island while working alongside government agencies and corporations. Sanjayan pointed to projections of 115 million jobs expected to emerge from the transition to a clear energy economy. He said a classroom on the water teaches lessons a lecture hall cannot.
Ahead of that opening, The Exchange is already operating programs across New York City, including a fellowship supporting early-stage climate technology founders, and more than a dozen events scheduled for Climate Week NYC from Sept. 20-27.
The weeklong festivities will conclude with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and The Exchange hosting a Harbor Homecoming event, including several Stony Brook representatives from the FoodLab at Stony Brook Southampton, theNYS Center for Clean Water Technology, and Collaborative for the Earth.
