The Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development (MDHEWD) is teaming up with high schools across the state to celebrate Decision Day, honoring Missouri high school seniors as they plan their postsecondary and career paths. Decision Day is observed on May 1, the traditional date when many high school seniors share their enrollment decisions with colleges.
Beyond celebrating high school seniors, Decision Day reinforces Missouri's commitment to supporting every learner and job seeker and encourages all Missourians to take the next step toward economic mobility, career advancement, and personal growth, no matter where they are in their journey.
"Decision Day honors every Missourian who is preparing for their next step," said Dr. Bennett Boggs, Commissioner of the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development. "Whether pursuing a degree, credential or certificate, joining the military, entering a training program or apprenticeship, or beginning a career, each pathway presents an opportunity for Missourians to build a better future for themselves. We are proud to support every learner as they take the next step toward growth and long-term success."
This year more than 200 Missouri high schools plan to take part in Decision Day, organizing activities that honor seniors for moving forward with their postsecondary and career goals. The day also gives schools a chance to support students who are still exploring their options and to remind younger students of the importance of planning for their future. The department invites and encourages all Missourians to share their future plans on social media using #MODecisionDay.
Decision Day was inspired by the NCAA's National Signing Day, when student-athletes commit to playing college sports. Missouri launched its own Decision Day in 2016 to recognize all students as they map out their future education and career plans. Individuals considering college should also remember to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and apply for scholarships to maximize their opportunities for financial aid.
Decision Day is one of MDHEWD's three Journey to College programs that support Missouri students as they learn about postsecondary pathways, access financial aid, and move confidently toward their future plans.
