Comprehensive Smart LED Street Light Upgrade at Port of Taichung Makes Port Roads Safer with Significantly Less Power

In line with ongoing smart and green transformation initiatives, Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) subsidiary Port of Taichung is nearly finished replacing the over 3,000 traditional streetlights located within the port area with state-of-the-art LED smart street lights. The project, which began in 2021 and is slated to end next month (August 2026), is significantly reducing port power demand while enhancing illumination quality, improving safety, and integrating advanced smart solutions.

In terms of energy efficiency, replacing traditional high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps with efficient LED smart lights will more than halve related power consumption from 400W to 140W per street light. This represents an overall annual reduction of around 2.84 million kWh in electricity usage, a savings of nearly NT$10 million in annual electricity expenditures, and a 1,327mt reduction in annual carbon emissions, further solidifying Port of Taichung's progress toward green port sustainability.

Beyond reducing power consumption, the project advances port objectives in terms of smart tech integration and improving safety and security. Street lights along major port roads have already been interlinked via a smart street lighting system that automatically identifies and reports functional problems in need of attention / repair and lets system managers accurately track and manage repair schedules, effectively reducing repair turnaround times and the need for manual inspections. Going forward, port administrators will update and expand the networked smart lighting system based on the actual efficiencies achieved and port priorities as part of the continued rollout of Port of Taichung's smart port infrastructure.

In terms of roadway safety, the new LED street lights feature optimized color rendering and uniform lighting that significantly improve illumination along critical roads through the port, around container gates, and at previously poorly illuminated sections of Linhai Road. Also, additional water and salt-proofing measures targeting street lights along roads with greater exposure to sea spray and moisture have been enacted with an eye toward further reducing maintenance and inspection costs over time and protecting road user and port staff safety.

Port officials highlight the important role of Port of Taichung's comprehensive LED street-light upgrade in achieving sustainable port operations. Moreover, future energy saving facilities and infrastructure upgrades, they stress, will continue the process of integrating advanced smart technologies into regular port operations to realize at Port of Taichung a world-class business environment that is exceptionally safe and secure, sustainable, and smart-tech driven.
