Is Coinbase Stock A Buy Right Now

After a 57.8% loss over the past twelve months, compared with a 9.8% gain for the S&P 500, investors looking at Coinbase Global (COIN) stock want to know whether the worst is over. Buying the stock means betting that Coinbase's newer products can make up for weaker crypto trading. Yet the company's sales have already shrunk over the past year. So what are buyers paying for at today's price?

What Are Buyers Paying For In Coinbase Stock?

Buyers are paying 6.3 times Coinbase's sales over the past twelve months, roughly double the 3.1 times for the S&P 500. That price would be easier to explain if the business earned a margin like the market's, but it does not: Coinbase's operating margin over those twelve months was 5.7%, compared with 19.0% for the S&P 500. A year earlier, on the twelve months to September 2025, that margin was 28.3%.

Coinbase did report a $719 million profit for the September quarter, but its operations earned only $30.9 million. The quarter's profit benefited from gains on its bitcoin investments, so it says little about the business itself. Over the full twelve months, items outside its operations still left the company with a $702 million loss, making its price against earnings not meaningful.

Can Coinbase's Prediction Markets Make Up For Weaker Trading?

For one quarter, by management's account, they did. During the October 29, 2026 call, management said prediction markets, which Coinbase launched in February, crossed $200 million of annualized run rate revenue in the September quarter. Crypto spot trading volume fell 10% from the June quarter, and management said the growth in prediction markets offset that decline. Revenue held flat with the June quarter at $1.22 billion.

Management also said subscription services made up roughly 49% of total net revenues. This may leave less of Coinbase's revenue tied to how much its customers trade.

Coinbase has not yet shown that the offset lasts. September-quarter revenue was still 35% below a year earlier. Furthermore, Coinbase's revenue had also fallen from the March quarter to the June quarter, so the flat result covers one quarter only.

Coinbase Stock Fell Over Twice As Far In Shocks

In the 2022 inflation shock, Coinbase stock fell 81%, compared with 24% for the S&P 500. In the 2025 tariff shock, it fell 41%, against 19% for the index. In each of five market shocks from 2022 to 2025, Coinbase stock fell more than twice as far as the S&P 500.

On the other hand, Coinbase held $9.21 billion of cash and short-term investments at the end of September, more than its $6.89 billion of debt.

For the risk to be worth taking, newer products such as prediction markets would have to keep growing while spot trading stays weak, and sales would have to stop falling from a year earlier. Coinbase is expected to report its fourth quarter in February 2027. When it does, its revenue against the $1.78 billion of a year earlier is the number to watch.

Does This Mean You Should Act On COIN?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
