City of Columbia to hold volunteer appreciation event Sept. 9

(COLUMBIA, MO)- The City of Columbia will host a volunteer appreciation event 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at Twin Lakes Recreation Area, 2500 Chapel Hill Road. Those who have volunteered with the City of Columbia over the last year have been invited.

During the City's 2024 fiscal year, volunteers contributed more than 32,200 hours toward City programs and projects. Based on a national value for volunteer service, these hours are worth more than $1 million. Volunteering serves as a way for residents to engage directly in the activities of local government and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of programs and services.

The 2024 Howard B. Lang, Jr. Award will also be presented at the event posthumously to Rich Eyler. Eyler volunteered with the City from 2005 until his passing in 2021, sharing more than 7,000 hours of service. The purpose of the award is to recognize a Columbia citizen each year for outstanding volunteer service to the City of Columbia.

Volunteers serve the City in numerous ways, including working in our parks, beautifying our streets, picking up litter, teaching the public about recycling, helping at festivals and special events, and keeping our community safe.
