As 2025 draws to a close, Bruins naturally find themselves reflecting on the year that was. UCLA has much to celebrate - it was a year filled with tremendous accomplishments by our faculty, students, alumni and staff, a year in which members of the Bruin community excelled in their fields and added to the world's collective knowledge, and a year in which we continued to strive to make the world a better place.
At the same time, it was a year marked both by uncertainty, as UCLA grappled with the fallout of the federal government's suspension of certain research grants, and by tragedy, as Bruins, along with the rest of Los Angeles, confronted the fires that carved an unprecedented trail of destruction through our city . In the face of that disaster, the UCLA community met the moment with generosity, kindness and a deep commitment to aid in the recovery, inspired in part by the stewardship our new chancellor, Julio Frenk.
At his inauguration in June, Chancellor Frenk spoke about the importance of kindness and compassion as he outlined a bold new path for UCLA - a collective vision culled from his interactions with thousands of Bruins through his Listening Exercise tour and refined in his One UCLA plan - emphasizing the university's role as a connective, impactful and exemplary institution.
At every step in 2005, UCLA has met that vision. Connective in its efforts to strengthen its ties with Los Angeles' diverse communities and the world. Impactful in its work to turn discoveries and scholarship into innovations that benefit society. And exemplary in its mission to foster an inclusive environment that prizes inclusivity. empathy and respect.
