Stony Brook University has installed New York State's first EnerFusion solar-powered micro-mobility charging station, expanding its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and student safety.
The EnerFusion ARA-EB2B unit is located outside the Chapin Apartments on East Campus and is designed to support the e-scooters, e-bikes, e-skateboards, and hoverboards popular with students.
The project, led by Campus Residenceswithin the Division of Student Affairs, supports multiple university priorities, including reducing indoor fire risks from lithium-ion battery charging and encouraging the use of environmentally responsible transportation. The station operates entirely off-grid and uses solar energy stored in gel-cell batteries, allowing 24/7 functionality without using the university's power supply.
The station includes:
Constructed with rust-proof aluminum and stainless steel fasteners, the structure is rated to withstand wind speeds up to 150 miles per hour. The unit is also customizable, offering future flexibility for additional features or branding.
"This station helps keep our buildings safer by moving charging outdoors, while also giving students a more convenient way to power their personal transportation," said Curtis Charles, assistant director of Campus Residences Information Systems and Division of Information Technology (DoIT). "It reflects our commitment to sustainability and to meeting the needs of our campus community."
The ARA-EB2B unit is manufactured in the U.S. and marks the latest in a series of infrastructure enhancements at Stony Brook aimed at promoting safe and sustainable campus life.
