WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) released the following statement on the House war powers resolution regarding the Trump Administration's military action in Iran.
"Since 1979, the Iranian regime has been a grave threat to the region, the U.S., our ally Israel, and global security. Iran is the world's leading state sponsor of terror, bankrolling the heinous terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. For decades, Iranian leaders have brutally murdered and repressed their own people. While building a stockpile of deadly weapons aimed at our allies, Iran has defied diplomacy and continues to seek to obtain a nuclear weapon. This would pose an unacceptable existential threat and the U.S. must remain ready to act to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran.
"The joint U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran have degraded Iranian military capabilities and led to the demise of its senior leadership. Our country is eternally grateful to our brave servicemembers keeping us safe and we mourn those lost in the line of duty.
"Now that we face escalation, the Administration must not put boots on the ground and risk the lives of our service members while there is no plan to end this conflict. I hope the Administration will come to Congress with a framework to end Iran's aggression, prevent further loss of servicemembers' lives, safeguard our economy, and protect Israel and our allies in the region. I continue to do everything I can to support our troops, stand with our ally Israel, and strengthen our national security."
