SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA - Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) is pleased to announce that Alex Abplanalp has accepted the position of Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) for the organization, effective October 20, 2025.
Abplanalp brings over 15 years of progressive leadership in community-serving organizations, including the past three years as the Head of Integrated Public Affairs and Communications, Strategy at the University of Washington School of Nursing in Seattle, Washington, where she was responsible for strategic planning, organizational leadership, communications and public affairs. Prior to that, she served over five years as Head of Power Communications, Executive and Internal, at Tacoma Power in Tacoma, Washington, where she was responsible for developing long-term strategic engagement plans while monitoring industry trends and regulatory changes. She also led the strategy and change management for advanced metering (AMI) deployment, smart grid implantation, energy conservation, asset management, data excellence, and demand response programs, as well as workforce-facing initiatives such as leadership development, safety culture, project management training, and strategic people management programs.

Alex received her Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences in Communications, Field Journalism and Master of Communication Leadership in Communities and Networks from the University of Washington.
MRES is a joint-action agency made up of 61 member municipalities in the states of Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. MRES provides its members with wholesale electricity along with a host of energy-related services.
