The Chair of Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Alderman Keith Kerrigan, has condemned the deliberate vandalism of a Speed Indicator Device (SID) in the district.
SIDs are deployed by PCSP throughout the year at a number of locations across the Derry and Strabane district. They are often placed in the vicinity of schools, as part of the PCSP's ongoing commitment to road safety. The devices display a driver's speed in real time, encouraging motorists to slow down and drive responsibly, helping to protect pedestrians, children and other road users.
In recent days one of the devices was targeted by vandals, rendering the SID out of action for a period of time.
Condemning the damage, Alderman Kerrigan said: "This kind of mindless vandalism is deeply disappointing. Our SIDs are in place to protect people, particularly children near schools, and damaging them puts lives at risk. Local communities regularly request that we place SIDS in their area because they know the real value of them.
"I appeal to everyone to leave the SIDs alone when they are in your area - they are an important road safety tool which helps protect your community. I urge anyone with information about this incident to contact police. PCSP remains fully committed to road safety across the district and will have this device repaired and in operation as soon as possible."
The PCSP is working to have the device repaired and returned to service. Anyone with information about the damage is asked to contact the PSNI on 101.
