Congratulations to all the Illinois performing artists that participated in the Midwest Arts XPO (MAX) from September 15 to 18 at the Baird Center in Milwaukee. Organized by Heartland Performing Arts, Inc. , MAX is a regional presenters conference that unites arts professionals from across the central United States to foster innovation and strengthen artist touring relationships.

The conference featured over 250 artist showcases across diverse genres, providing attendees with numerous opportunities to witness live performances. The New Colleague Program, supported by the Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin Presenters Networks, offered newcomers a guided introduction to the industry, fostering connections and providing essential resources. Additionally, professional development sessions covered a wide range of topics, from managing remote teams to arts advocacy, ensuring participants left with valuable insights and skills. Deputy Director, Encarnacion Teruel, and Director of Programs, Jackie Banks-Mahlum, participated in the conference to support Illinois artists and participate in the annual Illinois Presenter's Network in-person meeting.

"It 's remarkable to think that just three years ago, a group of presenters, agents, and artists came together to build something new in the wake of the Arts Midwest conference's departure," said Tommy Hensel, Heartland's immediate past president of the board and this year's conference planning chair. "What's most inspiring is that MAX is entirely volunteer-run. Every organizer balances full-time work alongside their commitment to this event. It's a testament to the strength of our arts presenting community and our shared passion for collaboration. This year, our on-site volunteers were also amazing. They provided nearly 200 hours of on-site volunteer support across 93 shifts to support our first Milwaukee visit."

Tommy added, "Milwaukee was a fantastic host, and we're excited to return next year from Tuesday, September 22, to Friday, September 25, 2026 . Illinois presenters showed up in force, and we hope even more of our state's arts leaders will join us next year, not just for booking, but to reconnect as colleagues and friends."
