City of Des Moines Looks to Community for Input on Old Fire Station Reuse

Des Moines, Iowa- Wednesday, April 1, 2026 - The City of Des Moines is advancing efforts to shape the future of old Fire Station #4 with input from the community.

The new Station #4, located at 1505 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, is designed to improve emergency response times and better serve residents in the northwest portion of the city. The old station was the second-oldest in the city, and no longer met modern operational needs for emergency services. The new station is strategically located to improve response coverage.

"This project was about delivering faster, more reliable emergency response while ensuring our firefighters have a modern facility that meets today's demands," Des Moines Fire Chief Jonathan Lund said. "The new location allows us to better serve the northwest portion of the City."

Next Chapter for Old Fire Station #4

To help shape the building's future, the City invites community members, developers, and business owners to participate in upcoming open houses, tour the facility, learn about the redevelopment process, and share their ideas for reuse. The feedback gathered will help guide the development of a future Request for Proposals (RFP), a document released by the City that will outline the site's redevelopment expectations and desired future uses.

"This is a unique opportunity to bring the community directly into the process as we think about the future of this building," said Breann Bye, Economic Development Project Manager. "Fire Station 4 has been part of this neighborhood for decades, and we want to hear from residents and stakeholders about what comes next and how this site can support their broader vision for the area."

Open House Dates

  • Tuesday, April 7 | 5-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 11 | 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Information about Fire Station #4
