2026 Day at the Capitol: A Recap

06/10/26

About 100 bankers from all across Ohio showed up in force last week for the 2026 OBL Day at the Capitol. On behalf of the OBL Government Relations team, thank you to all those who took the time to join us in Columbus for this important advocacy push.

Advocates voiced support for some key bills and issues in nearly 80 legislator meetings throughout the event:

  • Fraud : HB 560 - Protect Our Parents Act and HB 648 - ELDER Act; Significant buzz was generated from our industry backing these two important bills for fighting fraud. Widespread consensus from our conversations is that these are good bills without any public opposition, and that many legislators would be supportive once put to a vote.
  • Property : In the mix of many Property Tax Reform bills in the legislature is HB 493 - Delinquent Property Tax Lien Certificate Sales to Third Parties. This General Assembly, we have a clear bill to support addressing the issue with champion Sponsors. Day at the Capitol afforded bankers the opportunity to directly present this issue to the broader legislature with an emphasis on protecting homeowners in their communities back home.
  • Credit Unions : A constant effort for OBL in the General Assembly is educating legislators on the difference between credit unions and banks, especially when Ohio has term limits leading to significant turnover in the legislature every cycle. Out of our many meetings with local bankers, several legislators came forward offering to champion legislation addressing the issues, such as for a bill to strengthen Ohio law in cases of Credit Unions acquiring banks. Moreover, many legislators approached OBL in the follow-up seeking additional conversation on CU's vs. Banks. If you have not yet done so, please Sign the Banker Credit Union Petition HERE.
