Davenport Parks and Recreation launch STRONG Minds Mental Health Program
Davenport Parks and Recreation will launch a new program focusing on youth mental health as part of this year's AmeriCorps grant program. The Davenport City Council accepted the $460,525 AmeriCorps grant during its regular meeting on August 26, 2026. Part of the grant will support the launch and programming of "STRONG Minds", a weekly programming series bringing 12- to 15-year-olds together to build the skills they need to identify and regulate emotions, feelings, and thoughts.
Three seasonal sessions will be offered throughout the year in the fall, winter, and spring. Groups will meet twice a week for two hours after school. The fall session begins starting October 13 - December 16 at the Roosevelt Community Center in the teen room.
"With the rise and impact of social media, peer pressure and navigating pre-teen and teen years, mental health education is becoming increasingly important," said Becca Niles, Parks and Recreation Interim Director and AmeriCorps Program Director. "This program will expand on the Camp VIBE activities we hosted this past summer with the goal of making this a permanent addition to our recreational and camp offerings."
Registration is currently open and will close on Friday, October 9 for the fall session.

The City of Davenport Parks and Recreation Department administers the AmeriCorps grant and will deploy approximately 28 AmeriCorps members to serve more than 20,000 hours in the community focused on positive youth development. Other AmeriCorps members will serve at Common Chord, Putnam Museum and Science Center as well as in Davenport Parks and Recreation programs.
