Congressman Pat Ryan Votes to End the War in Iran for the Fourth Time, Resolution Successfully Passes House

For more than three months, the Trump administration has waged war in Iran without Congressional approval, which has cost Americans by some estimates $100 billion, killed 13 brave U.S. servicemembers, and wounded hundreds more.

For weeks, Ryan has called on his colleagues to join him in asserting Congressional authority and reining in Trump's recklessness endangering troops and U.S. national security

The War Powers Resolution passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 215 to 208.

WASHINGTON, DC - Yesterday, Congressman Pat Ryan voted to pass a War Powers Resolution to end President Trump's war in Iran, assert Congressional authority and rein in Trump's recklessness endangering troops and U.S. national security. After months of calling on his colleagues to join him in voting to end this war, the resolution passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 215 to 208.

For more than three months, the Trump administration has waged war in Iran without Congressional approval, which has cost Americans by some estimates $100 billion, killed 13 brave U.S. servicemembers and wounded hundreds more, and caused prices to skyrocket at home.

"This vote to end the war in Iran is a huge deal. This was not an easy fight. Since the start of Trump's illegal, reckless war, Republicans have used every procedural trick in the book to stop us and let this vote fail three separate times. But yesterday, the People's House spoke with the People's voice," said Congressman Pat Ryan. "I'm so proud of every patriot in our community who spoke out and stood strong because it was your voice that made this vote possible. This is a major victory - only Congress has the authority to declare war, not the president, and we made that clear. But our troops are still in harm's way and gas prices continue to climb, and we will keep fighting until President Trump does the right thing and ends this war."

Congressman Ryan has been a consistent opponent of unconstitutional action against Iran, and has repeatedly cosponsored and voted in favor of War Powers Resolutions, citing both the monetary and human costs of continuing down an escalatory path without a long-term plan or end goal. Last month, Ryan introduced legislation to prohibit the use of additional taxpayer funds for military action against Iran in the absence of an Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) or official declaration of war from Congress. Ryan questioned Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth about the Iranian drone strike on U.S. troops at Port Shuaiba, which killed six soldiers and wounded 30 others on March 1. A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll found that 61 percent of Americans believe using military force against Iran was a mistake, making Trump's war as unpopular among Americans as the Iraq War during the peak of violence in 2006 and the Vietnam War in the early 1970s.

Congressman Ryan is a U.S. Army veteran, served two combat tours in Iraq, and is the first West Point graduate to represent the Academy in the U.S. House of Representatives. Amid recent threats to veterans' benefits, national security concerns, and rising threats worldwide, Congressman Ryan led his fellow veterans in Congress to create the Democratic Veterans Caucus. He sits on the House Armed Services Committee and has led extensive legislation to deliver relief for veterans, servicemembers, and military families.
