Intermittent lane and side street closures planned along 8th Street starting Monday

Motorists traveling on South 8th Street may encounter intermittent lane closures, flagging operations and temporary side street closures near Moreno Avenue and Garner Street during the week of May 18.

The closures are necessary for installation of water valves as part of the ongoing project to replace the 24-inch water main beneath 8th Street.

Motorists can expect the following impacts:

  • Monday-Tuesday, May 18-19:
    • Westbound Moreno Avenue west of 8th Street will be closed. Traffic will detour via Lower Gold Camp Road, which reconnects to Moreno Avenue.
  • Tuesday-Wednesday, May 19-20:
    • Garner Street will be reduced to one lane with flaggers directing traffic. Drivers should expect intermittent delays.
  • Wednesday-Thursday, May 20-21:
    • Westbound Moreno Avenue east of 8th Street, which serves businesses in the area, will be closed. Traffic exiting businesses will detour via Abbot Lane to access 8th Street and westbound Moreno Avenue.

South of this work area, the existing center lane closure on 8th Street remains in place from Motor City Drive to Summer Games Drive for installation of the new water main. No left turns are permitted within the closure area.

Current detours include:

  • Southbound 8th Street traffic turning left to Motor City Drive is detoured via Automotive Drive and Motor World Drive.
  • Traffic from Motor City Drive can access southbound 8th Street via Automotive Drive.
  • Traffic turning left to and from Summer Games Drive is detoured via Olympic Village Drive at the south end of the closure.

The section of the lane closure near Summer Games Drive is expected to reopen during the week of May 18 following installation and testing of the new water main, allowing left turns to resume.

North of this work area, additional structural improvements are being designed for the west side of the Fountain Creek bridge. Additional information will be shared as details become available.

Access to local businesses throughout the project area remains open and clearly marked at all times. Motorists are asked to slow down, use caution in work zones and plan for extra travel time.
