The Norman Fire Department advises the public of an increase in wildfire activity as dry conditions continue across the area. The lack of moisture over the past several months has created conditions more favorable for wildfires.
"Due to the abundance of available fuels, low relative humidity, and ongoing wind conditions, even small wildfire incidents can quickly escalate into dangerous situations," said Deputy Chief Joel Chesser. "The Norman Fire Department encourages residents to take proactive steps to prepare their homes and protect their families in the event of a wildfire."
Information on wildfire preparedness, including how to safeguard your residence, is available through the National Fire Protection Association at online through the National Fire Protection Association. Taking measures such as disposing of heavy accumulations of debris around property, cleaning roofs and gutters of dead leaves, or moving flammable materials away from wall exteriors are advised.
In addition to preparedness planning, residents can help prevent wildfires by ensuring trailer safety chains are properly secured while towing, properly discarding smoking materials, and following the City of Norman Burn Ordinance at all times.
As wildfire risk increases, residents are urged to have an evacuation plan in place and to remain aware of changing weather and fire conditions.
