For generations, the former Karara Railway Building has been part of the local landscape with a long and valued history in the district, and now the community is being asked to help shape what comes next.
With the building's deteriorating condition raising questions about its future, local memories, knowledge and ideas will be important in helping determine the best way forward.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the people of Karara could offer an important perspective on the historical landmark that had been part of their community for generations.
"This building is part of Karara's story, and we know there will be people in the community with memories and local knowledge that can help inform what happens next," Mayor Hamilton said.
"Before any decisions are made, we want to understand what the building means to local people and hear their views on the options available to us."
An inspection by Council's Facilities Team in October 2025 found the building to be structurally unsafe, with extensive termite damage and concerns about potential ceiling collapse. The site has been subsequently fenced and public access restricted.
The question now is what comes next, with the community invited to have its say on two possible paths forward: relocating the building or removing it if it cannot be safely retained or relocated.
A local business has also expressed interest in purchasing and relocating the building as part of a broader development proposal. Relocation would involve exploring what is needed to safely stabilise and move the building, and Council remains open to interest from other organisations.
Another option is the possible removal of the building, with consideration given to how commemorative plaques and other historically significant elements could be preserved.
Mayor Hamilton said the challenge was balancing the building's community significance with safety, cost and what could practically be achieved.
"There are some very real challenges with the condition of the building, but we also recognise the connection the community has with it," she said.
"Local knowledge and community sentiment are important pieces of the picture, and I encourage anyone with a connection to the building to have their say and help shape its next chapter."
